Fife 'n Drum - Kent, CT

One afternoon last weekend, Lee and I headed to Kent again just to go to the Fife 'n Drum.  The minute we walked in the door we were greeted and seated.  They brought our drinks to us quickly and we never had to request refills.  Lee ordered beef stroganoff for his meal and creme brulee for dessert.  I ordered chicken with a thyme sauce and veggies and peach, blackberry cobbler for dessert.  Lee loved his creamy beef stroganoff and I'm not always a fan of chicken, but it was cooked very nicely.  It wasn't dry and icky, the veggies were yummy and the sauce was delicious.  Our desserts were also good.

I was impressed by their wait staff.  The restaurant got very busy and the service didn't falter.  That's how things should be done!!  I know how hard it is to wait on tables, because I did it more than once and I sucked. I would always forget things.  I'm still not sure why I ever got a tip. Pity, I guess. That's why I admire people who can do it so well.  It's a hard job.

There is only one thing that wasn't good and that is that we were only given a menu with meal type entrees and this was lunch time.  We weren't given the options of burgers and sandwiches, which we saw many people order after us.  They must have been regulars and knew about this secret menu that we we not made aware of.  If you go there for lunch, definitely ask for the sandwich menu too.  That's the reason they didn't get a five pumpkin rating.  I don't like feeling bamboozeled!!

Brio Tuscan Grille - Danbury, CT

This morning Lee and I picked up my stepson, Matt, who had flown in from Mystic for a quick bite to eat.  The diner looked crowded when we drove by so Lee wanted to try brunch at Brio.  What a waste of time, money and calories!!  First of all, we walked in the restaurant, which wasn't busy and stood there for about 5 minutes waiting to be seated.  That is never a good sign.  Our waitress, who was the only bright spot,  took our drink orders and food orders in a timely manner,  Lee ordered the Sicilian omelette. with smoked ham, bacon, sausage, caramelized onions, roasted tomatoes mozzarella and brunch potatoes.  I ordered the ham and biscuit benedict with grilled asparagus and brunch potatoes.  Matt ordered the Caesar salad with chicken.

Here's the deal...we waited almost 35 minutes for our food!!  When it arrived, my eggs had been sitting under a heat lamp for so long that they weren't even poached any longer and the biscuit was burnt.  Lee said his omelette wasn't bad, but it looked brown and over done to me.  The brunch potatoes on Lee's plate were burnt, but mine looked okay.  They just tasted meh.  I guess Matt's salad wasn't bad, but it was a salad soooo.  We were in a time crunch at this point, so Matt could fly home in his allotted time. We ate very quickly and Matt was smart to ask for the check as soon as our food was delivered.  All in all, not a great experience and instead of enjoying our time with Matt, we were on edge about the food taking so looong.  BTW, there were at least four cooks there.

Maybe dinner time would be better, but I will never go there for brunch ever again!!!  If we try dinner some time I will re-review.

Rye Ridge Deli (the old Oscars) - Westport, CT

My friend, and I used to go to Oscars all the time, then the owner passed away.  I think I read that some employees took over the business.  Now it's Rye Ridge Deli with 3 locations.  Good news, it's still yummy!!  It's also fun to check out all the stores on the street.

When you are seated, you are given a bowl with some pickles, two dill and two half sour.  They are so good!  Lee ordered the salmon club with fries and I ordered a pastrami sandwich with cheese and thousand island dressing.  Lee said his sandwich was very good. My pastrami was great, it wasn't all fatty and nasty. All the food seemed very fresh. Service was good and the bathroom was really clean. We did try to get some bagels at the counter to bring home, but that part isn't very organised. There was an awesome selection of deli food, I just wish there were people to wait on us.

Hudson Anchor - Sleepy Hollow, NY

To begin our day in Sleepy Hollow we went on a tour of the Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown cemeteries.  Our tour guide was awesome and we saw the grave of Washington Irving!  Everyone should take a trip there to get into the Halloween spirit.  The headless horseman will be there for the next 3 weekends.

After our tour, we found a restaurant by the river called The Hudson Anchor.  Lee and I both ordered the Hudson Anchor burger.  It was braised short rib and ground chuck blend, smoked bacon, cheese, tomato, and fries.  At $22.00 it was pricey, but it was delicious.  The service was phenomenal. Our drinks were never empty and we were asked how our food was.  The outside deck was full so we ate in a cute room that faced the river.  It looked like they have a small stage for entertainment too.

It was a very pleasant experience to end a fun day!!

Applebee's - Danbury, CT

Applebee's is not my first choice of restaurants to go to eat, but Lee wanted to give it another shot, because we hadn't been there in a couple years. Lee ordered salmon and I had the Chinese chicken salad.  My salad was pretty good, but Lee thought his salmon was a child's portion.  Everything was just okay.  Most of the food was pre-made and warmed up.

The best thing about our visit was the service, it was very good and helped because the food was mediocre at best.
