Update: Market Place, Danbury, CT

We tried Market Place in Danbury, hoping it was better than the Woodbury restaurant.  We both ordered hamburgers, because we aren't rich and didn't want to go broke eating a quick dinner.  The waitress, who was very nice, asked if we wanted any extras on our burgers or salad etc. instead of fries. Never mentioned an up-charge. I got the regular burger with fries, but Lee said avocado on the burger sounded good and he got the salad instead of the fries.  The burgers were delicious.  They were cooked properly and juicy.  Then we received the bill.  Ten extra dolllars for avocado and salad.  Unbelievable!!  Almost $40 for two burgers!  I'm done with that place.  When I want another good burger, I'll head over to Chuck's where I don't feel like I'm getting the shake down.

El Coyote - Danbury, CT

We love El Coyote.  It is one of our favorite Mexican restaurants.  Our favorite part is that they offer salad if you don't want the rice and beans.  The salad has the most delicious ginger citrus dressing, yummy!  Lee ordered his regular chicken enchiladas and I ordered the chicken fajitas. My fajitas had a decent amount of chicken and I love when some of the peppers and onions are charred from the hot skillet. I also liked that they gave me separate plate to make my fajitas, sometimes places don't do that. There was success all around.  Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable.  The atmosphere isn't screaming Mexican, there is more of a nod to the culture.  Very nice!  It was an enjoyable time all around.

Widow Browns - Danbury, CT

We went to Widow Browns because we hadn't been there since the renovations.  The inside looked pretty much the same.  The waitstaff was so so.  Lee never got a refill on his soda and the food was okay.  Lee ordered the salmon sandwich which was mashed like tuna fish, which makes me believe that it was maybe canned salmon.  Lee wasn't thrilled. I had a cobb salad that wasn't bad.  It was a little odd that it had something like a bean salsa in the salad, but it tasted good.  The service was a little lacking. I think that we need to try it again and order something different.

Putnam House Restaurant

We have been to Putnam House twice for brunch and once for lunch.  Every time we were there for brunch, there was always some kind of issue.  Two times in a row Lee had to ask for toast even though it was clearly written on the menu.  One time we were basically ignored and had to wait a long time just to get our check.  These problems were the tip of the iceberg.

Lee convinced me to go there for lunch one day.  He saw a special on their Facebook page called the Put Hut burger, it had mushrooms and cheese and looked delicious.  Lee messaged them and asked if they have that burger all the time or if it was just a special for that day.  The response was that they have the Put Hut burger all the time.  So we went there just for the burger.  We got there and Lee ordered the Put Hut burger and the waitress said that they don't offer it anymore. It was just posted the day before. Lee told her that the person who messaged him said it was one of their best sellers and he showed the waitress the picture.  She said she would check with the kitchen.  She came back and said that they don't have that burger.  So I didn't understand why they didn't attempt to make a burger with cheese and mushrooms for him.  That's one lazy kitchen!!!  The waitress also repeatedly told us that it was her first month and she didn't know the menu very well.  Really??  You don't know the menu after a month??  Wow!  She also told us that the person who does their Facebook page probably doesn't know that they didn't offer it anymore.  When we got home Lee messaged the Facebook page again and the person said that there must have been a misunderstanding. and why didn't he just ask for a burger with mushrooms.  Yikes!

Lee ended up ordering another burger and I ordered the cheesesteak.  His burger was fine and my sandwich was all melted American cheese with some steak and the roll wasn't even toasted.  I think they may have an issue with toasting things.

Needless to say, we will not be going there again.  The complete disregard for the customer was astounding!

King's Breakfast and Lunch - Newtown, CT

We love King's and I don't know anyone who doesn't like it there.  I ordered the "Eight is Enough" and Lee ordered the "Country Fixins".  Just delicious!  The thing I like most about King's is that everything is always consistent.  The food is always good and Lee's coffee always gets filled.  Every time I've eaten there the food has been delicious and different from the usual breakfast fare.  Don't get me wrong, they do have the normal stuff, but it's so nice to have other options.  I really enjoy their bocco bread and fresh fruit. There really isn't much more to say other than if you have never been there, you should give it a whirl.

V Thai - Ridgefield, CT

Lee and I have been to V Thai many times over the years and it was one of our favorite restaurants.  We visited last month and something had changed.  Maybe it was because we went on a Saturday afternoon or there was a different cook.  We normally have gone on a Monday for lunch and we would get the lunch special.  The entree would include soup and green tapioca pudding (yummy).  This was a weekend, so there wasn't a lunch special.  The waiter was good, but never asked us if we wanted anything to drink other than water.  It was strange.  Lee got his regular chicken with oyster sauce and I got my usual pad kra prow with shrimp.  When we received our food, it was plated differently than all the other times we ate there.  Normally the rice is in a pyramid, but this time it was under the meat and veggies.  I may have had 5 shrimp, if that many.  The food was tasty and a little different.  Then we ordered the green tapioca that we both like.

The service was okay and the biggest issue we had was paying $50.00 for basically a bunch of veggies and a little protein.  It has never been that expensive before, so there must be new owners or management.  Even taking into account, that it wasn't a lunch special, it still shouldn't have been that expensive.  My entree was $18.50 and Lee's was $14.50. If I remember correctly, there weren't any prices on the menu. Holy craparooie!!  We will be looking for a new Thai restaurant or I'm going to have to learn how to cook Thai.

Red Lobster - Danbury, CT

We hadn't been to Red Lobster for many years and Lee wanted to try it out one night. Lee ordered the Seafarer's Feast and I had the Seaside shrimp trio.  Number one:  I love those cheddar biscuits, but I held myself back and only ate one.  We also had a salad with each of our meals.  Lee thought his food was excellent, much to his surprise.  My fried shrimp was good, the shrimp and pasta was also good, but the scampi was very salty. I brought half of my food home for our son. All in all, we were pleasantly surprised.  The waiter was very good and we didn't have to ask for one single thing.

John's Best Pizza Restaurant - New Milford, CT

We really liked the ambiance when we walked into the restaurant.  The wait staff was very nice and attentive.  Lee ordered his typical stuffed shells and I ordered a combo with a stuffed shell, a couple ravioli and what I can only assume was lasagna underneath a ton of sauce.  Lee enjoyed his food and mine was okay.  I'm very picky about Italian food and I really liked the sauce.  Some of the best around.  I wasn't a big fan of the lasagna.  Too much meat and nothing was distinguishable.  No layers, just a blob.  The bread wasn't that great either.  Maybe we have to go back some time to try the pizza.  We also really liked the salad dressing. Yum!
The waiter also recognized Lee from DMV.  He told Lee that his wife said he was a really nice agent when he gave her her road test. It was a nice compliment to Lee.

Market Place Kitchen and Bar - Woodbury, CT

We recently went out to dinner at Market Place with 2 other couples on a Sunday evening.  I wasn't impressed.  Lee had made reservations and they tried to put six people in a small booth with a chair at the end.  The chair would have been blocking anyone from going up and down the isle.  Our friend, thankfully, insisted that we get moved.  They did end up setting a decent table for us.  Then it came time to order our food...four times we were told that they were out of the food.  It was crazy!  Lee ordered ziti with bolognese which was extremely over priced.  I got the last short rib, because they only had one left.  They were also out of strip steak, pork loin and other things that I don't remember.

Lee and I had the nacho appetizer that was good.  The waiter brought over bread for all of us to share.  It was 6 small pieces of bread, about the size of my thumb, with olive oil and cherry butter.  Lee said that the butter was good.  I think our friend ,Ed, had a couple pieces too.  It was disgraceful!!  I almost felt insulted.  We received our over priced meals and Ed realized that his food should have come with green beans, not asparagus.  He doesn't like asparagus and was never told about the substitution.  UGH!!  My short rib was bland to say the least.  I kept putting salt on it just to get some flavor and the vegetable puree was gummy.  Everyone else had pretty decent meals or at least no one complained about their food.  Three of us had different desserts and they were, by far, the best part of the meal.  Pumpkin creme brulee, molten cake with ice cream and smores bread pudding, all were yummy.

I'm dinging the wait staff for not telling us what they were out of right off the bat.  The whole thing wasn't great and that was our holiday get together with our friends. We will be picking another restaurant next time.

Fife 'n Drum - Kent, CT

One afternoon last weekend, Lee and I headed to Kent again just to go to the Fife 'n Drum.  The minute we walked in the door we were greeted and seated.  They brought our drinks to us quickly and we never had to request refills.  Lee ordered beef stroganoff for his meal and creme brulee for dessert.  I ordered chicken with a thyme sauce and veggies and peach, blackberry cobbler for dessert.  Lee loved his creamy beef stroganoff and I'm not always a fan of chicken, but it was cooked very nicely.  It wasn't dry and icky, the veggies were yummy and the sauce was delicious.  Our desserts were also good.

I was impressed by their wait staff.  The restaurant got very busy and the service didn't falter.  That's how things should be done!!  I know how hard it is to wait on tables, because I did it more than once and I sucked. I would always forget things.  I'm still not sure why I ever got a tip. Pity, I guess. That's why I admire people who can do it so well.  It's a hard job.

There is only one thing that wasn't good and that is that we were only given a menu with meal type entrees and this was lunch time.  We weren't given the options of burgers and sandwiches, which we saw many people order after us.  They must have been regulars and knew about this secret menu that we we not made aware of.  If you go there for lunch, definitely ask for the sandwich menu too.  That's the reason they didn't get a five pumpkin rating.  I don't like feeling bamboozeled!!

Brio Tuscan Grille - Danbury, CT

This morning Lee and I picked up my stepson, Matt, who had flown in from Mystic for a quick bite to eat.  The diner looked crowded when we drove by so Lee wanted to try brunch at Brio.  What a waste of time, money and calories!!  First of all, we walked in the restaurant, which wasn't busy and stood there for about 5 minutes waiting to be seated.  That is never a good sign.  Our waitress, who was the only bright spot,  took our drink orders and food orders in a timely manner,  Lee ordered the Sicilian omelette. with smoked ham, bacon, sausage, caramelized onions, roasted tomatoes mozzarella and brunch potatoes.  I ordered the ham and biscuit benedict with grilled asparagus and brunch potatoes.  Matt ordered the Caesar salad with chicken.

Here's the deal...we waited almost 35 minutes for our food!!  When it arrived, my eggs had been sitting under a heat lamp for so long that they weren't even poached any longer and the biscuit was burnt.  Lee said his omelette wasn't bad, but it looked brown and over done to me.  The brunch potatoes on Lee's plate were burnt, but mine looked okay.  They just tasted meh.  I guess Matt's salad wasn't bad, but it was a salad soooo.  We were in a time crunch at this point, so Matt could fly home in his allotted time. We ate very quickly and Matt was smart to ask for the check as soon as our food was delivered.  All in all, not a great experience and instead of enjoying our time with Matt, we were on edge about the food taking so looong.  BTW, there were at least four cooks there.

Maybe dinner time would be better, but I will never go there for brunch ever again!!!  If we try dinner some time I will re-review.

Rye Ridge Deli (the old Oscars) - Westport, CT

My friend, and I used to go to Oscars all the time, then the owner passed away.  I think I read that some employees took over the business.  Now it's Rye Ridge Deli with 3 locations.  Good news, it's still yummy!!  It's also fun to check out all the stores on the street.

When you are seated, you are given a bowl with some pickles, two dill and two half sour.  They are so good!  Lee ordered the salmon club with fries and I ordered a pastrami sandwich with cheese and thousand island dressing.  Lee said his sandwich was very good. My pastrami was great, it wasn't all fatty and nasty. All the food seemed very fresh. Service was good and the bathroom was really clean. We did try to get some bagels at the counter to bring home, but that part isn't very organised. There was an awesome selection of deli food, I just wish there were people to wait on us.

Hudson Anchor - Sleepy Hollow, NY

To begin our day in Sleepy Hollow we went on a tour of the Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown cemeteries.  Our tour guide was awesome and we saw the grave of Washington Irving!  Everyone should take a trip there to get into the Halloween spirit.  The headless horseman will be there for the next 3 weekends.

After our tour, we found a restaurant by the river called The Hudson Anchor.  Lee and I both ordered the Hudson Anchor burger.  It was braised short rib and ground chuck blend, smoked bacon, cheese, tomato, and fries.  At $22.00 it was pricey, but it was delicious.  The service was phenomenal. Our drinks were never empty and we were asked how our food was.  The outside deck was full so we ate in a cute room that faced the river.  It looked like they have a small stage for entertainment too.

It was a very pleasant experience to end a fun day!!

Applebee's is not my first choice of restaurants to go to eat, but Lee wanted to give it another shot, because we hadn't been there in a couple years. Lee ordered salmon and I had the Chinese chicken salad.  My salad was pretty good, but Lee thought his salmon was a child's portion.  Everything was just okay.  Most of the food was pre-made and warmed up.

The best thing about our visit was the service, it was very good and helped because the food was mediocre at best.

Texas Roadhouse - Danbury, CT

I really like when you go into a restaurant and you are greeted right away, which was the case at Texas Roadhouse.  Our server was very nice and on the ball.  The sweet rolls with cinnamon butter is a nice way to begin a meal.

Lee ordered an 8 oz. sirloin medium and shrimp.  He had a salad and baked potato for his 2 sides.  The steak was perfectly cooked and his salad looked so good that it made me wish that I had gotten one too.  I ordered half a rack of ribs, baked potato and green beans.  The ribs were so meaty that I could only eat half of them.  They were very good. They also put the right amount of butter on the potato and for once and I didn't have to request more butter. I don't have a lot to say about this meal except everything was yummy and the service was great!

Kibberia - Danbury, CT

When we got there, the restaurant was slow and we were surprised because it was a Friday night.  I will say that it filled up quite a bit as the evening went on and there seemed to be many take out orders.  We ordered our food at the counter and I got my usual spinach pie with hummus and Lee ordered the lamb kabob rice platter. Lee's food was a little pricey for what he received.  Lee's food took 20-25 minutes to come out. My spinach pie was brown and crunchy on the outside, not soft and yummy like I'm used to.  Lee said his lamb tasted like beef, but I don't eat lamb, so I wouldn't even try it.
I also wish that I had enough pita bread for the amount of hummus I got.

The staff was friendly and polite, but I'm not sure that we will be heading there again any time soon.

Tilly's Table - Brewster, NY

I'll start with the positives.  We loved looking out the window while we were eating and seeing alpacas and horses.  They are so cute!  The building looks like a renovated barn.  Very pretty place.  I loved visiting the miniature horses and chickens after we ate.
We were there today for brunch and the farmers table was amazing.  It had bagels, muffins, pastries, salmon, platters of cheese, meat, veggies, olives, tomatoes with mozzarella and a big salad.  There was also supposed to be a bottomless mimosa.

Lee ordered steak and eggs and I ordered a bacon and cheddar omelette.  Both dishes came with a side of bacon and home fries.  Lee's steak was supposed to be medium and parts of it was raw, and I mean raw!  The home fries on both plates were cold even though they had good flavor.  My omelette was burnt on the edges and I couldn't taste any bacon in it at all.  The cheese was a couple slices melted on top.  The best part of both of our meals was the side of bacon.  The rest was not so good!

The service left a lot to be desired.  Lee's bottomless mimosa was never refilled or even acknowledged as being empty.  My water wasn't refilled until it was time to leave.  Our server passed our table many times and never once asked how our food was even though we obviously left a good amount on our plates.  We waited for our check at least 15 minutes.  We gave all the indications that we were ready to leave.  Our napkins were on the table,  we were sitting back in our seat and I put on my lip gloss. We were very disappointed, because we expected so much more.  Tilly's is also an educational center with a culinary section.  They need to teach better if the students are the same people as the kitchen staff. We will give it one more try at some point and I'll do another review.

Buffalo Wild Wings - Danbury, CT

We walked into another restaurant with disgusting carpeting.  Remember, this place is also a bar.  It kind of smelled.  I couldn't help but wonder how many drunks have barfed on that carpet or how much alcohol was embedded in the nooks and crannies.  As if I wasn't grossed out already, the tables were very dirty and sticky.  We had to ask for ours to be cleaned.  The booths were so worn out that the foam was showing.  I don't know why we didn't walk out.

The waitress was good.  She took our order in a timely manner.  Lee ordered wings and I had some kind of chicken sandwich.  Lee's wings weren't mild like he ordered them, they were more medium and my sandwich tasted a little off.  I'm not sure if the oil was a little old or it was an odd breading.  The waitress actually asked me about the sandwich, which leads me to believe that there have been issues.  The fries were the best part.

I don't know about anyone else, but I really like going to 99.  I've never had a meal that I didn't enjoy and I really love the popcorn they give you while you wait for the entrees.  My favorite thing to eat there is the mushroom sirloin.  It's an 8 oz top sirloin steak served over sauteed mushrooms with grilled asparagus and tomatoes.  There is also a small spring salad with a balsamic drizzle.  Very yummy and only 450 calories.  Lee enjoyed the lobster roll with fries and cole slaw on our most recent visit.  We had a waiter in training so things were a little slow, but that's understandable.  I won't complain about the service.

Hudson House River Inn - Cold Spring, NY

Lee and I went to the Hudson House River Inn for brunch a couple weeks ago. The setting of this Inn is beautiful.  It's right on the Hudson River and across the street is a gazebo.  There are many benches surrounding the gazebo, so no matter where you sit you can enjoy the beautiful scenery.  The Main Street is lined with quaint shops, so plan on making a day of your visit.  We will be returning in the fall just to witness the changing leaves.

The wait staff was exceptional and the food was an elevated brunch food.  We both had a delicious bowl of lobster bisque.  It wasn't just the essence of lobster, there were chunks of lobster in every bite.  That honestly would have been more than enough for me, but the brunch included an entree.  I had the Maryland crab meat and spinach omelette finished with a dijon mustard sauce and hash browns.  Lee had the Land and Sea, which consisted of a petite New York strip steak, bordelaise  sauce, cajun shrimp, horseradish mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables.  Both dishes were made to perfection.  My eggs were not overcooked and Lee's steak was a juicy medium.  He absolutely loved the cajun shrimp and asked me if I could make it for him.  Maybe I'll try one day.  The coffee and water were filled without asking.

The Inn was very nice with a fireplace in the bar area and wide plank floors.  The only complaint I have is that the bathroom wasn't very clean.  The floor didn't look like it had been scrubbed in a while and the corners were filled with dirt.  This was very disappointing and it made me wonder about the cleanliness of the kitchen.

Table Talk Diner - Poughkeepsie, NY

Please feel free to share my reviews on your Facebook pages!!

Last night, we went to Poughkeepsie to see my cousins that were in town.  This wasn't my first time at this diner, but I have to say it's one of the best diners that I've ever been to.  My cousins all enjoyed their food which varied from a tuna melt to pot roast to fish.  Lee and I stuck to typical diner fair.  He had a gyro and I had a turkey club without mayo, but with ranch dressing on the side.  The waiter was surprised by my request.  Is it a New England thing or is it a me thing?  Either way, it tastes good. My sister had soup.  We also had dessert.  The pies were yummy and the dessert case had a nice assortment of cookies, pastries and pies.  I forgot to take a picture, because I was too busy laughing my butt off with my family. We were actually laughing so hard, everyone messed up their mascara...except for Lee.  I wish we all lived closer.  Here's the cousins picture!!

Augies Numero 1 Restaurant and Pizza - Danbury, CT

Oh, what to say about Augies!  Those of us who live in Danbury know that Augies was sold a while ago and some drama ensued. I don't care about the drama, I care about the food.  I honestly don't notice much of a difference in the food since the sale.

The place was busy when we got there and they were expecting a large group.  The room was not properly set up, because we were literally concerned about how we could get around to the front door when it was time to leave.  We were table blocked.  It was very weird.  We have been there before with a larger crowd and we were set up in the room to the right when you walk in, but this time the group was set up to the left, in front, and there was no room to move.  There were also tables that were unusable because of the setup.

Anyway, the service was good.  Lee ordered his usual stuffed shells with a salad and I ordered chicken parm with penne pasta.  Lee liked his stuffed shells, but he never met a stuffed shell that he didn't like.  The bread was fresh and the garlic focaccia is good to dip in sauce.  My chicken was okay.  I must say that I am not a huge fan of their sauce.  It's a little too acidic for my liking.  I wish they would throw a raw carrot into the sauce while it's cooking, just to get the acid out and get a slight sweetness.  There's my two cents on that matter. HAHA!  I may be a sauce snob.  I didn't grow up in CT, I grew up in Poughkeepsie, NY and the Italians in my hometown really knew how to cook.  When Lee tasted Italian food in NY, he understood the difference.  I think the best Italian food in Danbury is made by Rocco at Anthony's Lake Club, but I haven't been to every Italian restaurant here yet.  Time and taste buds will tell.

Billy Joe's Ribworks - Newburgh, NY

Last Friday Lee and I went for a nice boat ride on the Hudson River.  After our boat ride, we walked along the river and checked out all the restaurants and there are many to choose from.  We settled on Billy Joe's.  We sat inside, but everything is open, so it's like eating inside and outside all at once.  The wait staff was on top of their game, which was shocking in such a busy place.  It was quite a conglomeration of people.  From bikers to families to construction workers to really hungry people like us.  It was awesome!!

Lee ordered ribs with a side of baked beans and cole slaw.  I ordered sliced brisket and cheddar sandwich with mac and cheese.  Lee's ribs were cooked to perfection and the baked beans with chunks of bbq meat in it were very yummy. My sandwich was huge and the mac and cheese was the best I've ever eaten.  I ate half of my sandwich, because I couldn't stop eating the mac and cheese.  It was creamy and cheesy with toothsome elbow macaroni.  I'm salivating just thinking about it. The sandwich was also delicious.

The waitress made sure Lee's soda was filled and there wasn't a wait for anything.
If you are ever in Newburgh, you should definitely stop by the waterfront and check out Billy Joe's.

Chuck's Steak House - Danbury, CT

My favorite thing about Chuck's is the salad bar.  There really aren't any other good salad bars around this area, and the bread on this salad bar is always fresh and crusty. I also love their french onion soup. The wait staff is always good and I appreciate how they help each other out.

My husband and I recently went there for the early bird and surprisingly, the menu is more extensive than most early bird menus.  Lee ordered the top sirloin with a baked potato and I ordered the grilled pork chop with a baked potato and a red sauerkraut. We both had the salad bar.  Lee's steak was well cooked as were my pork chops.  My only complaint, and it may just be me, is the sauerkraut had way too much caraway in it.  I couldn't eat it.  I didn't go hungry by any stretch of the imagination.  The food was good and they also make a good burger.  I've also had the stuffed sole in the past and there was a time that it was cold in the middle.  I'm hesitant to order it again.

The food is not earth shattering, but you can always have a decent meal there.  It's also a nice atmosphere for small events or gatherings.

Hanna's is a local Middle Eastern Restaurant and Market.  I've heard through the grapevine that it was recently sold, but the food was as delicious as always.  I went there for lunch with a friend and we both really liked our food.  The server was a lovely young lady who anticipated what we needed without us having to ask.  I was impressed.

I had the combination platter which consisted of hummus, baba, tabbouli, spinach pie, cheese and olives.  My friend had Shish Tawook, which is chicken marinated in garlic and spices.  It looked so good.  We were both too full to try any of the desserts.  There was a table near us who ordered a bunch of appetizers and small plates.  I really need to do that one day.  Yum!

American Pie Company - Sherman, CT

I love this place!  The food is homemade and the desserts are amazing.
We went at an odd time one day so Lee got breakfast and I got lunch.  I think he ate a western omelet and I had the birdie, aka a real turkey sandwich from roasted turkey with cheese, bacon and tomato on grilled marble rye bread.  So freakin' good!!  It's one of those sandwiches that you crave when you are hungry or in the middle of the night. You know what I'm saying.  We also brought home a strawberry rhubarb pie and an eclair for me.  The eclair was huge and I initially intended to eat half, but that didn't happen.  I ate the whole thing in one sitting.  It was just too good to stop! NOM NOM!!

The waitresses are great too. They always make you feel like they've known you forever and are very friendly. The portions are substantial, so go there hungry and don't skip dessert.  They take pie orders for the holidays too!  I can't think of anything I don't like about this place.

We also enjoy stopping by the Historical Society when we are in Sherman.  You can find some unique gifts and books.

Senor Panchos - Southbury, CT

I fell behind on my reviews lately, that's why there are so many today.  I think I better start changing my hair soon so restaurant owners don't recognize me.  Uht oh, Lee will have to change it up too. HAHA!!  I figure it could go one of two ways, either we get the most amazing food or we get a little spit... for those of you who don't know me...I'm kidding.

Anyway, I really like the salsa at Senor Panchos.  It isn't pulverized.  There are small chunks of onions and whatever else they put in salsa. I ordered the Santa Fe burrito and Lee had beef tacos.  Our friends had a Santa Fe burrito and steak fajitas.  Lee didn't seem overly impressed with his tacos, but they are tacos.  I enjoyed my burrito, except I wish there was a little less cinnamon in the mole sauce.  The chicken in the burrito was well seasoned, something other places don't pay attention to.  Lee ordered flan, because he always orders flan.  It was creamy and looked very good.  Darn, now I want flan!!!  The rest of us didn't have dessert.  Our friends did get cappuccino while Lee ate his flan.  We meet our friends at this restaurant quite often and half the time the cappuccino machine isn't working, so you may or may not be able to get it there.  Overall it's a decent American/Mexican restaurant and good service.

Cover Two Sports Cafe - Sandy Hook, CT

The restaurant is new to us, but we used to go there when there were different owners.  The first thing I noticed when we walked in was that it did NOT smell like stale beer and...vomit anymore!!  Yippee!  We were greeted immediately and our server was a lovely young lady.  Good start.  Lee and I went back and forth about ordering nachos and that's what we did.  They were pretty good, but it's hard for me to really judge, because someone (not me) likes them with just cheese and olives.  For lunch Lee ordered a hamburger and I had the Philly cheese steak.  They were both okay.  My sandwich definitely needed more cheese and fewer peppers and onions.  Lee's burger was huge, but nothing to write home about.  We both got tater tots and yum.  Tater tots are the bomb!!  Because we ate nachos before our meal, we brought home half of each sandwich.

We didn't have to ask for drink refills.  The service was very good.  It wasn't bad for a sports bar.  I think we need to try it again to get a better feel for the food.  The table next to us got 2 different kinds of wings and they looked delicious.

Riverview Waterfront Cookout - Seymour, CT

This place is so nice for outdoor, casual dining.  It's a hidden gem behind a small strip mall.  This was our second time there and the food was the same as last year. I love consistency.  They have live music, an area with a fire pit and a section for parties.

Lee ordered the Clambake.  This includes a grilled lobster, 1 lb of mussels, 1 lb of steamers, 2 smoke roasted chicken thighs, 1 ear of corn, coleslaw, kielbasa and parsley potatoes.  I ate the mussels and 1/2 an ear of corn, Lee gobbled down the rest.  I also had the lobster roll that was loaded with fresh lobster in butter on a toasted roll.  None of that mayo stuff on lobster that ruins everything!

The staff is friendly and the owner walks around talking to people and making sure you have a good experience.  There is something on the menu for everyone.  We've heard that the ribs are very good, I think we may try them next time.  Bring a sweater, because it can get a little chilly later in the evening, but it's so darn cozy.  Later in the season the fire pit will be lit and there are chairs surrounding it to sit and enjoy the weather.

Murphy's Pub - Newtown, CT

Lee and I decided to go to Murphy's Pub for lunch today.  We haven't been there in quite a while and I think the last time we were there was about 2 years ago to see The Murphy's Law Band and eat dinner.  The entertainment was great and the food was very good.  For the sake of being completely transparent, we have known the Murphy family for a long time and I will do my best not to let it influence my review.

There weren't many people there when we arrived, but it had just opened for the day.  As time went on the bar seats filled up with people eating lunch and enjoying a refreshment.  The bartender came to us quickly and got our drink order.  (A soda and a water, we are light weights).  Lee ordered a Rich's reuben with fries and I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with onion rings, which is very unusual for me these days.  It was very cool that Lee ordered Rich's sandwich, because he worked with Rich Murphy and his uniform shirt is hanging in the restaurant.  Sadly, Rich passed away two years ago in October and we definitely felt his absence while we were there.

On a brighter note, we received our lunch in a timely manner and the food was awesome.  It may have been the best cheeseburger I have ever eaten.  It was juicy and flavorful.  Sometimes burgers can be very bland, but this one was well seasoned and didn't even need ketchup.  I used to be a burger aficionado, before my dislike of ground beef, and I have to admit that was one yummy burger.  Lee also really liked his reuben.

We will be going back soon for dinner and to hear a band.  I'm already looking forward to our next visit.

Hopkins Inn and Restaurant-Warren, CT

Yesterday, my sister, Mel and I went to a wedding at Hopkins Inn.  To begin with, the location is absolutely beautiful!!  It overlooks Lake Waramaug and incredible mountains that are full and lush.  I couldn't imagine a more picturesque location for a wedding, lunch or dinner.  There are tables outside for the regular restaurant.  The inside is an authentic Inn with very nice decor and there is a winery on sight.

The cocktail hour was outside and the everything I tried was good.  There were mini crab cakes, stuffed mushrooms, bruschetta, shrimp toast,  brie, crackers and cheese, chicken satay and more.  Dinner was set up in one of the dining rooms.  It began with a fresh salad with dressing.  I'm not sure exactly what the dressing was, but I liked it.  For dinner, we had our choice of entrees.  I got the prime rib, the gentleman next to me got schnitzel, and his wife got scallops.  Every dish was amazing and cooked to perfection.  My prime rib came with shredded potatoes and zucchini.  We were all members of the clean plate club!  This wasn't the crank stuff out wedding food, this was top notch food.  For dessert we had a decedent chocolate cake with a chocolate mousse filling and coffee. Then, they brought around a plate filled with pastries.  I just gained weight writing this review!!

The wait staff couldn't have been any better.  Water and drinks were filled immediately.  The staff was attentive and polite.  Out table was served all together and we weren't left waiting.  To top it all off, our table had the nicest group of people, which made this wedding even more fun.  Great food, great company and a great day.

Congratulations Cathy and Shawn!

From my kitchen

Just for fun, I thought I would share a post of what I made for dinner last night.  I wanted to prove that we don't eat out all the time and I do know how to cook.  Last week was an exception, because we had visitors from Missouri, Colorado and Myrtle Beach, and it was my birthday, so we ate out a lot.

Here's the lasagna I made and yes, I also made the sauce (not gravy).  As you can see we did quite a job on it.  Lee also brought it for lunch today and I had a piece for breakfast. HAHA!

The waitress at this establishment was very knowledgeable and polite, even when the customer could be crabby.  LOL, I crack myself up. The beverages were serve yourself.  Dessert was either ice cream or a peach.  Again, it was serve yourself, in this very casual environment.  Hang out clothes are encouraged, bras are not!

The White Horse - New Preston, CT

The White Horse Country Pub & Restaurant has rustic decor and a British leaning menu.  We have been there many times and have always enjoyed the food and the ambiance.  Our visit yesterday was definitely not up to its usual standards.  I'm hoping it was lacking because of employees being on vacation or the heat or there was a really awesome party the night before.

Lee ordered the filet mignon eggs Benedict with home fries and fruit.
I ordered the bacon, cheese and tomato quiche with home fries and fruit.  I've had the quiche before and enjoyed it, but something wasn't quite right this time.  We waited almost 25 minutes for our food.  Lee's filet was cold and my quiche was rubbery and my fruit was hot.  Obviously my plate had been sitting under the heat lamps, while the meat was almost being cooked (barely warmed).  Lee's coffee cup remained empty for quite a while as many members of the wait staff passed by our table and a few were just hanging out in the server area.  It was so bizarre, because it's always been one of our favorite places to eat.  One positive note is that their home fries were good and I'm picky about home fries, but I wasn't crazy about the warm fruit.  We are going to give this another try, because maybe it was just one of those days.

Sometimes when I'm doing these reviews, I feel like Statler and Waldorf, the grumpy Muppets in the balcony.

Vespucci Tuesday Pasta Night Danbury, CT

I need to start out by saying that pasta night is run by the lodge members, so I won't be harsh, like I usually tend to be.  If you want to take a break from cooking in this hot weather or if you're in the mood for delicious pasta and meatballs, this is the place to go.  Dinner includes salad, bread and all you can eat pasta.  Since I moved to CT, I've been on the hunt for good Italian food and I don't think you can get more authentic then this.  Not only is the food really good, there is a lovely gazebo and also amazing views of Lake Kenosia.  At only $9 per person, it's an affordable, casual place to bring the family.

Jim Barbarie's Danbury, CT

Friday was my birthday so Lee and I were going to go to White Horse, but they don't accept the free entree coupon on Friday and Saturday dinners.  Then we tried Black Angus, but they had a 2 to 3 hour wait.  UGH!!!  I don't wait for food!  Tommy did offer us two seats at the bar, but...umm...NO!  Finally we decided to go to Jim Barbarie's.  It used to be the go to restaurant, but has slipped a little the past few years.  I was willing to give it another try, because we hadn't been there in a few years.

Lee ordered the special lobster bake and I ordered the surf and turf scallops and steak.  I was excited to have a salad with my all time favorite salad dressing, creamy garlic.  Our salads arrived and I was enjoying the yummy dressing, when all of the sudden, I feel a foreign object in my mouth.  I thought, oh crap did I just break a tooth, did a filling come out?  As I manipulated the object out of my mouth, I realized it was metal.  I cleaned off the object and it was...a small screw.  I handed it to Lee and he called over the host, who apologized and offered me a free appetizer.  I definitely wasn't touching the salad again, so I got stuffed clams, which I shared with Lee.  Barbarie's always had a good stuffing and the clams were good, even though I had kind of lost my appetite.

We received our entrees and Lee's food looked very good.  My stuffed scallops were sweet and properly cooked, my steak was bland even with a sauce on it and slightly tough.  I ate one scallop and a little steak, but I was very turned off at this point.  I didn't want to make a big deal, so I didn't say too much, I just asked for a doggie bag. We opted not to get dessert.  As we were leaving, the gentleman at the front said to us that a drink is on him next time we go there.  One problem, I don't drink.  Anyway, this review breaks my heart.  I wanted to say wonderful things, but I have to tell the truth and it wasn't wonderful.  I still had a really good birthday, despite the food fiasco.

The servers were nice except for one young man who looked annoyed to be working on a Friday night. I get it, I was young once too.  Wait, I am still young!

Captain Lou's Chowdah House Bethel, CT

We brought two friends with us to visit Captain Lou's.  Neither one of them had ever tasted clam chowder, so we thought that was a good place to start.

Lee ordered fried scallops and I had the fried calms.  Our friends had hamburgers and all of us ordered the New England clam chowder.  The clam chowder was delicious.  It wasn't overwhelmed with potatoes and you could see the clam pieces.  Our friends were shocked by how good clam chowder tasted, because they are not huge seafood fans.

Lee liked his scallops and fries.  My clam strips were over cooked, but they tasted okay.  My friend ordered onion rings with her burger and she said it three times and when the order came out, she received fries.  We joked and called them Connecticut onion rings (she's from Missouri).  I do have to say that the young woman who took our order at the counter, didn't seem like she was in a very good mood.  She was a little grouchy and preoccupied.  I was surprised by this, because when we had been there in the past, the people were very nice.  Maybe she was having a bad day.

Wooster Hollow Cafe Ridgefield,CT

Lee and I decided to give Wooster Hollow another try today. We have had issues with the service there in the past, and we were hopeful that they were resolved.  They weren't.

When we walked in, we were greeted by the owner, who is a very pleasant man.  The waitress took our order in a timely manner and our food arrived after about twelve minutes. Not bad so far.  Lee got smoked salmon eggs benedict with home fries and I ordered regular eggs benedict.  The benendicts were good and the home fries were edible.  Here's my question...why can't any place make decent home fries.  They are always bland and under cooked or mush. It is rare to find home fries that don't suck!! Hey restaurants, start paying some attention to your home fries!!!

So here's the deal.  Lee had to ask for a refill on his coffee and no one bothered to ask us how our meal was, but we could see the servers chatting with each other.  There were a couple male servers even play punching each other and they were standing right next to the coffee.  This was all happening about 7 feet away from me.  The other issue is that the owner sees the whole thing and doesn't say a word.  This is the same thing that occurred at our other visits.  We sat waiting for our check for 12 minutes, which wasn't too bad because we have waited much longer in the past. There was a table near us that actually had to get a server to take their order and like I said, there were three of them goofing around, ignoring the customers.  Terrible!!  It's a shame, because the food is pretty good, but I'm done with the nonsense.

DinerLuxe New Milford,CT

I have 2 reviews to do today, but I'll focus on DinerLuxe for this review.  I'll try to get to the other one later today.  I'm beginning to think that we eat out way too much!  Lee always wants to eat out, because he hates when I get the stove dirty.  LOL!

We have been to this diner many times and it looks like a throw back from diners in the olden days. Hahaha!  The service was very good, as usual.  There was a young family in the booth next to us and the waitress was commenting to the family how cute she thought the kids were.  With that one of the kids said, "You should see our dog!"  We all cracked up.  I don't generally laugh out loud, but that was very funny and cute.  There's nothing better than starting a meal with laughter.

Lee ordered the meatball grinder with fries and I ordered the jitterbug with fries and veggies.  It's not something I would usually order, but my Mom always ordered that and she was on my mind, so I gave it a go.  Lee liked his grinder, but he does prefer his meatball grinder from another restaurant.  The nice thing was, that they gave him extra sauce on the side without having to ask.
My jitterbug was good.  The gravy was a little too sweet for my taste, but it wasn't bad.  The veggies were really good with peppers, onions, zucchini and summer squash and who doesn't love fries smothered in gravy!  We skipped dessert. We were full.

Pros:
Very friendly wait staff
Food served in a timely manner
Above average diner food

Cons:
Lee's soda not refilled (that's being picky)

Agave Danbury, CT

I'm going to start this review by saying that I am not a fan of Mariachis at restaurants.  I feel like they are very intrusive while I'm trying to eat.  It's so annoying to be enjoying a meal and you have have to stop eating to smile and be polite to the musicians and then they expect a tip for interrupting your meal and making your food cold.  We try our best to avoid the Mariachis at all cost.  We actually left the restaurant quickly when they were getting close to our table.  We decided to forgo coffee and dessert, just to get the hell out of there.  It seemed like many of the other tables did the same thing.  The tables with kids may enjoy the traveling minstrels more than we do.  Enough of my rant, on to the review.

I ordered the chicken flautas.  I've never had them before, so I'm still not sure how they should taste, but I'm pretty sure the chicken shouldn't have tasted like it did.  There was chicken inside a fried flour tortilla with lettuce, tomatoes and very little cheese on top.  There was supposed to be pico de gallo, but I didn't see or taste any.  The chicken was so dry that it reminded of that scene in "Christmas Vacation"  when they are eating the extremely dry turkey and hacking up shards.  I had to dip the flautas in salsa, just to get it down.
Lee ordered chicken fajitas and they were good.  There was quite a bit of chicken and veggies.  Sometimes restaurants hardly put any chicken in their fajitas, but this was loaded.

Pros:
Wait staff was attentive as soon as we sat down.
Food came out in 10 minutes.
Good fajitas
Okay chips and salsa

Cons:
Blasted Mariachis (unless you like them)
Didn't fill up our drinks
Didn't ask how the food was
Dry flautas

To be fair, I've had other dishes at Agave that were good, so I can't give them a bad rating.  I would just say, don't order the flautas if you go there.  Also, find out what nights and times the Mariachis will be there, depending on your preference.  Sorry, I forgot to take pictures of the food.

Rating; 😒 for flautas

JK's

Not that JK's really needs to be reviewed, because everyone in the greater Danbury area already knows how great it is.

JK's is the "Cheers" of Danbury!!  There have been very few, if any times, that we did not walk in and know at least one person.  There was one time that I was there for lunch with a couple friends and between the three of us we knew every single person in the place.  It's not just a place to eat, it's a gathering place where everybody knows your name.  It's a place to see old friends and meet new ones.

The food is consistent.  You know when you go there to eat that your food will be really good and prepared in a clean environment.  JK's is primarily famous for their "Original Texas Hot Weiners" , but there are so many other delicious items to choose from.  My husband's favorite breakfast sandwich is ham, egg, cheese, link sausages and fried onion on a toasted hard roll.  He likes to call it the DMV, because it's worth the wait! LOL!  I don't know if I have a favorite, I order according to my mood.  Everything is good so you can't go wrong with anything you order.

The one thing that makes JK's so amazing is the staff.  When I was in the hospital and out of commission for quite a while, I received messages often that the waitresses and busboy were asking about me.  After being away for months and in isolation, the first place I went was JK's.  When I walked in, the waitresses all stopped by our table to say hi and how happy they were to see me out and about.  They welcomed me home and that's what JK's is, it's a home.  A home where you are fed, feel comfortable and cared for.  It's so much more than a restaurant,  it's a warm comfy blanket of nourishment!

Blu Pointe Newburg, NY

We weren't planning on going to this restaurant, but we were in Newburg to visit George Washington's Headquarters and we just followed the river until we found a place to park. All the other places were jam packed. I said to Lee that I thought that this restaurant looked a little pricey and I was correct.  When we entered, the hostesses didn't pay too much attention to us and then asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside.  I, of course, said inside. We were led to an open dining area that had a roof, but it was basically outside.  I could touch the people walking on the sidewalk.  We didn't mind too much, because the weather was beautiful and there weren't any bugs. Bugs piss me off!  The first waitress was very uninterested in waiting on us.  The rest of the wait staff and there were many, were very nice.  It was fun watching the boats on the Hudson River and the ambiance was good.

I think I'm going to do a pros and cons section so you don't have to spend too much time on my ramblings.
Pros:
Right on the water
Waitress asked before she cleared the table
Kept our drinks filled
Yummy bread and tapanade with eggplant
Tasty desserts

Cons:
Never told that there were specials (heard another waitress tell other patrons after we ordered)
I ordered my steak medium and it was given to me well done
We were never asked if our meal was okay
Other patrons were given more attention
Told me that I was getting greens as a side and I got broccoli
I was given two very small potatoes. Smaller than a golf ball

This is what we ordered:
Me
NY strip steak 10oz with a sherry peppercorn sauce $34
Berry panna cotta, mixed berry coulis, honey cake (eeww), meringue, and chantilly cream $11

Lee
Swordfish charcoal grilled fillet, cucumber tomato quinoa, Tuscan kale. with a lemon saffron emulsion $36
Vanilla bean creme brule, whipped chantilly cream, petite baked meringue. $10

I'm going to start giving ratings that will correspond with holidays or time of year or weather.  I will give the ratings from 1-5.  1 being cocky and 5 being freaking awesome!!

Overall our experience was pleasant and a treat that we won't be doing again any time soon.  If you have an occasion where you don't mind dropping some coin, this is a nice place to go.

Carriage House Patterson,NY

Happy 4th of July weekend!!

First of all, I want to stress that this is only my opinion!!  There are things that I don't like that many people may enjoy very much. I have a friend that loves everything I don't like and visa versa. I'll be like, "I hate that place" and she'll say, "I love that place." For example:  I hate salmon, so any review of a salmon dish will be my husband's opinion. I don't care for sour cream, mayo or raspberries. I don't eat sushi or blue cheese for medical reasons.  I also don't drink alcohol.  Those are the big things.  I'm sure more things will pop up as we venture through a food extravaganza.  Okay, that was an exaggeration of epic proportions!! LOL!

I do have a couple pet peeves that I will most likely grumble about more than once.

1.  I hate when a server starts picking up plates before everyone is finished eating.  I'm sure that comes from my childhood, because my mother would get mega pissed if we ever picked up our plates before she was finished eating.  Now, as an adult, it bugs the crap out of me too.  I think it makes the person who isn't finished eating feel rushed.
2.  When a glass is empty, no one should be waiting for a long time for it to be refilled.  I mean people could choke to death, especially if the food sucks.
3.  Another thing, and this may just be me, but I don't like when they put raspberry sauce under my dessert.  Don't even drizzle that shit near something I'm going to eat.
4.  Waiting forever for someone to take my order, for food to come out (within reason) or to get and pay a check.  I do take into consideration how busy a place may be or a kitchen that can be backed up.

On to reviewing:
We went to Carriage House for lupper (the meal between lunch and supper).  I ordered the Carriage House Philly and Lee ordered the salmon BLT.
Lee always orders that and he loves it!! Salmon with mixed greens, bacon, tomato, remoulade sauce on a brioche bun.
My philly was okay.  Thinly sliced seasoned steak, broccoli rabe, caramelized onion, provolone cheese on a crispy garlic wedge.  I thought it was light on the steak and very heavy on the broccoli rabe which made the bottom of the roll soggy. I'm not a fan of a soggy bottom.  It wasn't terrible, it just wasn't what I was looking for. Half a sandwich filled me up. I will try it again and say no broccoli rabe.
Both orders came with fries and they were very crispy. Nom nom!
Lee got a root beer float for dessert and I had cheesecake, which I shared with Lee.  They were both good except for that blasted raspberry drizzle under the cheesecake.

All in all a big thumbs up, because we have never had a bad meal there and the wait staff is very good.  They are friendly and fill up Lee's soda in a timely manner.

Mangia Peeps!
